Guest Mix + Interview – WRCKTNGL

Denver-based WRCKTNGL has been making waves in the SoundCloud scene for years. Effortlessly moving between wave and phonk, the producer has created an extensive catalog of heaters. When we put out a call online to get more Phonk guest mixes, WRCKTNGL was easily among the top artists tagged. Giving everyone what they want, we are pleased to announce the talented producer has dropped by for an exclusive Guest Mix + Interview.

Our interview touches on his foray into phonk, what makes the community so special, the fog, finding happiness outside of music, and much more. The mix is 40 minutes of phonk to vibe out to featuring music from WRCKTNGL, OGs, and under-the-radar gems. Peep both below.

What can we expect from the mix? Where are we headed when we press play?

You can expect a range of Phonk bangers, just a whole bunch of moody ass beats that you wanna vibe out to. I’m hoping when you play this mix, you’ll find yourself cruising, or sparking it up at home chillin’. I had an absolute blast recording this one!

How did you first get into Phonk?

I can’t remember exactly. There was a Tommy Kruise edit that I heard on TNGHT’s Diplo & Friend’s mix that I love back from like 2012, and that sparked my interest into finding the producers that make the same music, while at the same time I also was really fucking with RVIDXR KLVN and SpaceGhostPurrp, which is the rap side of it.

The Phonk community is a goddamn treasure chest. So much talent, so many nice people, everyone is so passionate about what they do and a lot of the artists don’t sweat the bullshit.

Can you tell us a little about the Phonk community and what makes it special?

The Phonk community is a goddamn treasure chest. So much talent, so many nice people, everyone is so passionate about what they do and a lot of the artists don’t sweat the bullshit. It’s a strong community.

Denver seems to be a hotbed for Phonk at the moment. What’s the scene like out there? What’s driving it?

Denver is known for having some of the best Dubstep/Bass Music shows in the country. Now I’m not knocking on it, but there does come a time where it gets old, and that’s where I think Phonk comes in. Phonk can be as hard as a riddim track or just as vibey as a house or trance track. Phonk is able to fit in every room. The scene is growing fast!

What is the vision behind PHONK AROUND AND FIND OUT?

I can’t speak for the heads of the PAAFO crew, but I really think they wanted to help push the sound to new heights and help it gain more traction. Give it some life in the world of live music. It was rare to catch a phonk set before 2022, now it’s more common! And what made it stand out was that these shows are being put on at The Black Box, a venue famously known for their Dubstep/Bass Music shows.

Tell us about the Fog.

The Fog was some little gimmick I sort of created when I was younger. There was a time on SoundCloud where producers would drop music and instead of hiring people to create artwork or making their own, they would find a common thing and use that as their aesthetic/visual aid. I’ve always loved the way fog looks so I just started using pictures of fog for my cover art. Eventually producer friends of mine would start giving me nicknames like, Fog Mane, Lord Fog, and Don Fog. Then eventually I started creating music based around the idea of “What would music sound like if it was created by fog?” Then that’s what sparked “The Fog.” It’s kind of like grunge haha, all aesthetic.

What makes you happy outside of music?

Family, friends, and Hot Wings. And some weed too

What have you been bumping on repeat lately?

Last six months I’ve been obsessed with Corridos Tumbados. Anything in that genre is what I’m heavily fucking with right now.

Are there any upcoming releases we can look out for?

I have a project with M!NGO coming out soon, a solo EP, and for sure many collabs I gotta touch up. Be on the lookout!

Keep doing whatever makes you happy, love your family, love your friends, and most importantly, love yourself.

Any final words for fans?

Keep doing whatever makes you happy, love your family, love your friends, and most importantly, love yourself.
