PREMIERE: Chicago House Legend DJ Deeon Remixes Cakes da Killa x Proper Villains’ ‘What’s The Word’

This new music Friday, we’re bringing the “dance” back in electronic dance music. Today, Chicago house icon DJ Deeon delivers his Half A Blunt Mix of ‘What’s The Word.’ The original track was in New York City legends Cakes da Killa and Proper Villains’ sought-after collaborative EP, Muvaland Vol. 2.

Cakes da Killa has been credited as one of the pioneers of LGBTQ+ acceptance in the rap community during the 2012 “queer explosion” in New York City. The rapper is known for blending elements of hip-hop and dance music, which explains the collaborations between names like Proper Villians and DJ Deeon. The song absolutely seems to be the perfect fit for inclusive music and fashion label HE.SHE.THEY., whose mission is to be “a place without prejudice for people to be people.”

While Proper Villains’ mix is bouncy and danceable, DJ Deeon’s rendition provides the gritty, acid tech house that makes you feel like you’re grooving in a warehouse at 2:00 am. Lavish lasers flow through the beat as Cakes da Killa chants, “Dance my little sista!”

There’s no way you’ll be able to stay in one spot when you hear it, so press play below and get ready to dance into the weekend.
