Fabian Mazur is everything that we love at FUXWITHIT. A producer and DJ who expertly fuses hip-hop and electronic music into impeccably crafted bangers. A master of his craft who’s been at it for years, always working to get better. With the ability to craft slow-burning emotive tunes, future bass bops, festival anthems, and filthy trap, there’s not much Fabian Mazur can’t do. His latest project Play, Bounce, Repeat reminded us of his immense talent with a slew of standout tracks. Fabian has been a mainstay on our site since our inception in 2014, so it’s overdue that we connect with the Danish legend for a guest mix + interview.
The mix is the perfect showcase of what makes Fabian Mazur so dope. Featuring a wealth of his own productions plus a ton of FUXWITHIT favourites, rap classics (look out for that Nelly flip) and much more, the mix is an energetic half-hour of heat. In the interview, we explore his love for Mondays and oatmeal, the keys to fusing electronic music and rap, his new online store, and more. Jump in below, you won’t be disappointed.
Tell us about the mix. What was your goal in putting this one together? What should listeners expect?
This is actually the first mix I have done this year. I wanted it to capture the sound that Iʼm known for but with little twists here and there. Expect hip-hop influenced bass music, bounce, and a lot of unreleased tracks!
How has Denmark been treating you? Whatʼs your favorite thing about where you live?
Denmark has been, and always will be, an amazing place. I bought a house here in Copenhagen last year and built a studio. Itʼs such a vibe! The thing I love the most about my city is that I can bike everywhere in like 10-15 minutes. I will probably never own a car!
I grew up listening to stuff like Timbaland and Pharrell and Iʼve always wanted to bring that bounce and organic sound into bass music.
How did Play, Bounce, Repeat come together? What inspired the project?
For a long time I have been wanting to make an EP that reflected my hip-hop influences. I grew up listening to stuff like Timbaland and Pharrell and Iʼve always wanted to bring that bounce and organic sound into bass music. This EP is my attempt at that and I could not be more proud of the result. Each track brings a special vibe and I was fortunate enough to have a network of artists that wanted to jump on these tracks for vocal features! As per usual I also had to bring my own vocals out for most of the tracks on the EP ?
Whatʼs the key to effectively bringing together rap and electronic music?
Thatʼs a tough question to answer. I feel like the two worlds complement each other nicely when put together. The attitude of rap is the perfect energy to build into an electronic drop. ‘I Do’ from the EP is an example of how I think these can blend together. Drama B had worked on “electronic” stuff before so he knew how to embrace that energy. Rappers who can nail that are hard to come by in my opinion.
What led to the creation of ELEMNT.STORE? What makes it special?
Thanks for asking about the store! I have been working on sound design professionally for many years and have
sold millions of samples on Splice through my Elixir imprint. Elemnt store marks a new beginning where I have complete control over the artistic aspect of the sample packs. My partner Jake and I had been working on the platform for a long time before launching and our goal is to grow into a curated platform for audio and visual content! The market is very saturated but our aim is to curate the highest quality of content and keep the releases to a minimum. We are doing a lot of free content to help aspiring producers such as free sample packs and daily producer tutorials on our Instagram stories.
Youʼve achieved a lot over the years. Whatʼs at the top of your list for goals that havenʼt been realized yet?
I wanna tour more! During the pandemic my lust for playing shows really went up. I canʼt wait to get out there and play all of this music. I have never been a heavy touring artist so I hope to be able to experience that! Oh, and of course, I want to work with Travis Scott. And Skrillex.
I think if I had a statistic of all the stuff Iʼve accomplished on Mondays throughout the past few years itʼs the majority of my career highlights!
Why is Monday the best day of the week?
Ha! Youʼve done your research ? I just love Mondays. This was a mindset that my old manager Majid taught me like 10 years ago. Monday marks the beginning of a new week. Itʼs like hitting the reset button. You can get up, crush your goals, get a new tune going, hit a workout, all of that stuff. I think if I had a statistic of all the stuff Iʼve accomplished on Mondays throughout the past few years itʼs the majority of my career highlights!
Where did your love for oatmeal begin? Whatʼs your go-to oatmeal recipe?
Having an American mother and a Danish father I grew up eating oatmeal for breakfast from a very young age. I actually have no idea why but Iʼm so happy that I did. Oatmeal is the best thing in the world. Keeps you full for hours and thereʼs endless variations of it. Right now my thing is a vanilla/chia oatmeal with banana, butter and peanut butter on top. OATMEAL GANG!
Itʼs about finding the things you love to do every day and making it a lifestyle. Something thatʼs sustainable for you for the rest of your life.
Youʼve been vocal about the importance of healthy living. What are your keys to living a healthy lifestyle?
I will always continue to preach health as I think itʼs the most important thing to live a happy life. Healthy living is a very individual thing. Healthy for some can be taking a 30-minute walk every day to reflect. For others it can be improving their diet gradually or getting in a workout once a week. The main thing I want to emphasize when it comes to healthy living is that Rome wasnʼt built in one day. Donʼt jump on some 3-week elimination diet or workout program because you think it will completely fix all your issues and change you as a person. Itʼs about finding the things you love to do every day and making it a lifestyle. Something thatʼs sustainable for you for the rest of your life. For me, Iʼm driven by the progress of working out in the gym but also working on my mental health through reflection, breath work and other methods.
Whatʼs the last book, TV show or movie that truly amazed you? What stood out to you?
The last book I read was Think Like A Monk by Jay Shetty. That book really made an impact in my approach to life and the way I view it. I heard about it through the “Feel Better, Live More” podcast which I also love. Ever since I hit my late 20s I actually enjoy reading things that make me reflect on the way I do things. Maybe itʼs just me getting old. lol.
What should fans expect from you for the remainder of the year?
I have a lot more in store for this year. Tons of tracks, collabs and of course sample packs on Elemnt store. Oh, and Iʼm also active again on YouTube with some producer content! I want to get into doing more educational content in the future. Stay tuned!
