Coming from Malaysia, Amirah Ali introduced herself years ago as a talented singer and songwriter who wants nothing more but to inspire people and send encouragement for unity. In 2020, such a difficult year for most of us, she released two singles ‘You Are My Land,’ and her latest ‘Tell Me.’
Both of the tracks were created to channel Amirah’s worried soul screaming for the peace. ‘My Land’ was written about her experience as a citizen of a troubled country, and what Malaysia was experiencing at the time. In an interview for Implurnt, Amirah explained “I was in tears when I composed this song. My country was going through difficult times because of corruption among our leaders, and I found this devastating. The nation was fighting for clean and fair elections, and I joined a peaceful protest. It is still so real to me, that I can hear and feel all of it, even now. I can still feel the emotions and hear my thoughts from that time. It was so difficult for me to watch my own homeland, the country I love so much, crumbling before my eyes.”
On her latest release ‘Tell Me,’ Amirah calls her audience for being more tolerant, thoughtful, and united. In the same interview, she unfolded her intention while writing the song ‘ I was deeply saddened when I saw the hatred people had for each other, simply because of the color of their skin or their religious beliefs. Composing “Tell Me” helped me get this off my chest. I believe we should be free to be our true selves. These differences that we have: race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc, are all unique and beautiful. I feel that differences should be celebrated, not hated.’
Amirah’s music and visuals are a difficult to define
