Drew Brees comments about the national anthem have sparked outrage from many Black artists, including Boosie Badazz.
Drew Brees has become a topic of conversation since his tone-deaf remarks went viral the other day. The NFL player was asked about players potentially kneeling as the NFL season resumes, given all that’s happening right now with the protests of George Floyd, and of course, Colin Kaepernick initially taking a knee as a form of protest against exactly this type of thing. Yet Brees stated, “I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country,” missing the point entirely.
Following heavy backlash online, Drew Brees issued an extensive apology. “I would like to apologize to my friends, teammates, the City of New Orleans, the black community, NFL community and anyone I hurt with my comments. In speaking with some of you, it breaks my heart to know the pain I have caused. In an attempt to talk about respect, unity, and solidarity centered around the American flag and the national anthem, I made comments that were insensitive and completely missed the mark on the issues we are facing right now as a country,” he wrote in an IG post.
However it’s doing little to fix the damage he’s incurred. Among those calling him out for his remarks, there has been Lebron James and Shannon Sharpe. Now Boosie Badazz joins the chorus of naysayers, vowing not to support the Saints any more.
Boosie shared an image that is currently going viral on social media, of Brees sitting with Trump and his wife Melania. In the caption, he not only admonishes him for his comments, stating how the Black community has been an important part of his career, but equally trolls him, saying that Trump may be in his wife’s DMs. He ends the caption with a simple demand: “TRADE HIM.”
