BROCKHAMPTON Goes For The Jugular in ‘ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT NEW MACHINE’

We were in need of a good rap album, and thankfully, BROCKHAMPTON just blessed us with ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT NEW MACHINE. The new album covers all of the bases: impeccable production, a plethora of influences, mega features, and the signature silky smooth BROCKHAMPTON flow.

If you don’t know already, BROCKHAMPTON is a Texas hip-hop group started by Kevin Abstract, Ameer Vann, Joba, Matt Champion, and Merlyn Wood in 2010, which grew into one of the most notable collectives in modern-day rap. Although it features a massive lineup of musicians, the crew is still able to collaborate and create a cohesive sound that shows each individual artist’s musical inspiration.

ROADRUNNER isn’t one-note. You can hear the impact of so many different genres throughout the record. ‘DEAR LORD’ is a straight-up gospel track that serves as a prayer for fellow BROCKHAMPTON member, Joba, whose father passed away. ‘WHAT’S THE OCCASION’ is driven by an electric guitar and takes an example from classic rock. ‘I’LL TAKE YOU ON’ provides that early 2000s R&B seductive sound, which isn’t surprising since it features Charlie Wilson: 13-time Grammy Award winner and R&B icon.

You’ll also see guest spots from Danny Brown, JPEGMAFIA, A$AP Ferg, and A$AP Rocky on the album, so there’s absolutely something for every hip-hop head on here. Seriously, ROADRUNNER has everything. From love songs to flex tracks to political commentary—if one thing’s for sure, BROCKHAMPTON doesn’t miss.
