Guest Mix + Interview – No Thanks

Canadian-based production duo No Thanks first burst onto the scene with their breakout single ‘So Hot’ over four years ago. Since then, the pair has been steadily refining their ‘Polite House’ signature sound and unleashing a wide array of banging bootlegs and impressive originals (see ‘Freak’). Their consistent output has landed them releases on Thrive Music and Insomniac Recs, plus performances at festivals like Beyond Wonderland, Fvded In The Park, and EDC Las Vegas. They’re currently in the midst of The Polite House Tour, so we thought what better than now to connect for a guest mix + interview.

The mix provides a perfect sample of what to expect from one of their sets, including a number of unreleased IDs. As for the interview, we talk touring, wild club experiences, their positive outlook, why being polite still matters, investigate if they really are wooks, and play a fun round of Fuck, Marry, Kill. Dive in below.

Set the scene before we press play. Where are we headed with this guest mix?

This mix is a taste of what a No Thanks live set sounds like. High-energy house music with a ton of exclusive tracks that you have never heard before. We love to bring fresh tracks to the table every set and give the crowd a unique and refreshing experience.

What makes a No Thanks set special?

I think what makes our sets special is the energy we bring to a house set. House sets can get repetitive, but I’d say our sets stand out because they are full of massive buildups, sing-alongs, huge drops across tech house and bass house, feel good vibey stuff. It’s not so “serious.” We jump around BPM’s from 122 all the way into the 140’s, you never know what you’re gonna get next at a No Thanks show.

How’s the tour been treating you so far? I know it’s still early in but any highlights? What are you most looking forward to?

The tour has been incredible! We have never traveled this much for shows in our lives and it’s certainly been an eye-opening experience. Getting to visit so many places in such a small amount of time is a blessing, and also very exhausting! On this tour, we are doing some shows with our friends Loud Luxury, and we are particularly looking forward to those shows. Playing big venues on support slots is something we haven’t done before, so we’re super grateful to the Loud Luxury boys for giving us this opportunity.

We have each been making music and in the industry for over a decade, and you learn to roll with the punches and setbacks over time.

You guys bring a really positive outlook to your social media. What powers your optimistic outlook? Any tips for others trying to live a more positive existence?

Our social media is just an extension of who we are as people, we’re very positive and cheerful guys who get to live our dream making music and play music in different cities every week. We have each been making music and in the industry for over a decade, and you learn to roll with the punches and setbacks over time.

You’ve been tweeting some interesting club musings. What’s the wildest thing you’ve ever seen in the club?

Honestly, the view from the DJ booth provides some interesting sights to behold every single night of tour… but as for wildest? Butt stuff… let’s just leave it at that.

We’re constantly surrounded by negativity in the world, and with our music and going on tour we just want to spread positivity through our brand and make music that makes people happy, smile, and dance.

Why does being polite matter in 2023?

It costs nothing to be nice, but it costs everything to be mean. We’re constantly surrounded by negativity in the world, and with our music and going on tour we just want to spread positivity through our brand and make music that makes people happy, smile, and dance.

What makes you happy outside of music?

Hanging out with family, friends, Giuliano’s dog, and ramen. It’s a simple life!

Are you really wooks?

The two of us are very different. Giuliano is 100% a wook, he goes to Shambhala every year, and on our weekends off from shows he goes to dubstep/riddim/dnb shows and forest raves for fun. Dejan is more of the kind of guy who goes home early and would stick out like a sore thumb in a group of wooks.

Fuck bass house, marry tech house, and kill speed house.

Fuck, Marry Kill: Bass House, Tech House, Speed House.

Fuck bass house, marry tech house, and kill speed house. This is a really tough one, but our relationship with bass house is kind of like our ‘side peice’ haha. We call her up sometimes to switch things up and have some fun but she’s not our ride or die. Tech house we can settle down with for life, she’s always got our back. Speed house is cool and all, but she just can’t hang around for too long or it starts to get too chaotic.

What should fans look forward to from you for the rest of the year?

We’re playing a buuuunch of shows on our Polite House Tour, so chances are we will be playing in a city near you if you live in North America. On top of that, we’re dropping a few more singles before the end of the year and continuing on with some exciting remixes on our SoundCloud. We’re working on lots of music that we want to drop as a larger body of work next year, so stay tuned for that as well

Any final words?
If you see us coming to your city, feel free to come say what’s up! We love to meet all of our listeners along the way, it’s one of our favorite parts of touring. Check out our latest single ‘Freak’ with San Pacho on Spotify as well if you haven’t yet! Thanks for having us.
